Asthma Can Be Treated

asthmaAsthma is a chronic disease which is characterized by recurring attacks of wheezing and, breathlessness. These attacks may vary in frequency and severity from individual to individual. Symptoms may occur periodically throughout the day or week in affected individuals, and some people symptoms are worse during physical activity or at night. While Asthma is most common in children, adults can and do develop asthma later in life.

While the exact causes are unclear, there are triggers that are recognized and should be avoided by people with asthma. Among the most known triggers are allergens such as pollen and dust, tobacco smoke, fear and anxiety. In fact, so many people are susceptible to asthma attacks that they need to carry inhalers should they have a sudden attack. In 2005, the World Health Organization recorded 255,000 deaths worldwide directly attributed to an asthmatic attack. That’s a quarter of a million people! Those figures alone are astounding.

There is no “cure” for asthma. Certain statistics have shown that after puberty, children suffering from asthma may experience fewer, if any attacks whatsoever. Also, it has been noted that attacks may be less frequent and less severe when they reach adulthood.

There are many prescription and OTC medications that are commonly used to control the symptoms of asthma. Inhalers are the most common and should be used with caution by people with high blood pressure. When they expand the airways, tiny capillaries are constricted resulting in rapid pulse and elevated blood pressure. Because of the potential for serious side effects many people are looking to nutraceuticals and naturopathic remedies that reduce that risk significantly.
