What Is Bruising?

Some people just bruise more than others but it doesn’t always mean there is some underlying condition that should be cause for concern. Actually, women are known to bruise more easily and more often than men. No, they are NOT clumsier, so get over it guys. It is thought that the ladies bruise more because they have thinner skin and those tiny veins are closer to the surface. But if you should notice that you are bruising more often than usual there are a few things you can watch for and there is also something you can do about the severity and duration of the bruise.

Bruising is nothing more than a pool of blood that is the result of a rupture or break in a blood vessel. The blood pools between the vein and the skin and it appears bluish or purplish when seen through the skin but in actuality…

Natural Remedies For Hangovers

Well, the obvious suggestion would be not to go out and get drunk, but since it’s too late for that let’s look at what you can do to counteract the ill effects as quickly as possible so you can get on about your day after. Probably the two most unpleasant parts of a hangover are the nausea and the headache. The headache is easy. Take an aspirin and in a few minutes the pounding will stop. But the nausea, that’s another matter altogether.

Some naturopaths advocate taking Lupulus Humulus which is really kind of ironic. It is said to treat nausea which is related to the nervous system. What makes it funny is that Lupulus Humulus is the fancy Latin name for hops. And we all know that hops is used in the brewing of beer. Maybe those alcoholics who say the best remedy for a hangover is a quick shot…

Treat Your Child’s Cuts And Scrapes Naturally

Every time a child falls and skins a knee or gets a cut or scrape parents are programmed to react in a ritual that not only makes the child feel better, but we feel better as well.

I think the psychology behind ‘kiss and make it better’ is more for the parents than it is for the child because we want to know that we are protecting them from hurts. The kiss is good. Your child feels better cos they have been psyched into thinking the kiss is magical and mom feels better cos she was there for her child. It’s the OTHER parts of the ritual that might not be so great.

The first thing a parent reaches for is an antiseptic to cleanse the cut. That’s not so awfully bad but what comes next is probably the WORST thing you can do. We all do it. After the…

MRSA Is Also Airborne

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Arueus, or MRSA as it is commonly referred to, is a particularly difficult-to-treat bacterium strain that manifests primarily in lesions on the skin or other membranes. However, there is a strain known as CA-MRSA that can affect the bones, joints and the heart. Any form of MRSA is commonly referred to as multi-drug resistant. Everyday new data is emerging and it is spreading more and in more ways than were previously believed. In fact, statistics show that in 2005 more people succumbed to MRSA than to the HIV virus.

In the past it was thought that MRSA was spread by contact from the lesion of an infected person to a non-infected person. This no longer appears to be the case. Hospitals around the world are seeking ways to prevent airborne spread of the MRSA bacteria. A recent study of hospitals showed that even after disinfection with HPV (Hydrogen…

The Link Between Caffeine And Cancer

A few decades ago women were told NOT to drink caffeine because it was thought to cause breast cancer. There was such a major scare going on nationwide, in fact worldwide, that all kinds of products began manufacturing caffeine-free alternatives. Decaffeinated coffees became the big thing and everyone breathed a sigh of relief that they had FINALLY eliminated one of the major known causes for cancer. But in light of recent research over the past several years it appears that some, if not most, of that information was inaccurate or incomplete. In fact there is an abundance of documented scientific data that proves otherwise. Scientific tests and clinical analysis have shown that caffeine may even be instrumental in preventing certain forms of cancer.

While it is never safe or advisable to state absolutely that such and such a substance or nutrient will definitely prevent or cure cancer, it is a good…

Naturally Treat Head Lice

If you have school age children then you know about this very common problem that seems to circulate at least once every school year. Head lice epidemics are especially prevalent in nursery schools, primary schools and elementary schools. While high schools do have problems from time to time it appears that by the time children reach their teens they have developed better personal hygiene skills. But all of us, including parents and grandparents, are susceptible to an infestation of head lice. The problem is twofold, unfortunately. Not only do those nasty bugs pose a threat to our health but the medicated treatments are highly toxic.

None of the AMA recognized treatments are safe. First of all, shampoos and treatments containing Lindane carry the risk of severe neurological side effects. These horrific effects have included anything from dizziness to outright seizures. Even death has been associated with Lindane shampoos or lotions.…

Natural Ways To Reduce Body Odor

In some cultures body odor is not only acceptable, but it is actually enjoyable. There is some basis for this because of a substance the body emits called pheromones. Although we can’t sense them consciously, as with the sense of smell, we ‘sense’ them on a subconscious level and are drawn to members of the opposite sex. This is sort of like a natural aphrodisiac. In our western culture we view body odors as unpleasant so we make every effort to mask the smell. Unfortunately, pheromones are thought to be inhibited by our use of deodorants and perfumes. Maybe to naturally reduce body odor without the use of chemicals that inhibit pheromones is the way to go! We could reduce unpleasant odors without masking pheromones.

There is a recipe of sorts which uses zinc for a natural deodorant. It calls for you to mix zinc oxide with witch hazel. Add…

Garlic Does More Than Keep The Witches Away

For so many centuries people have been using garlic not only as a flavor for foods but for medicinal purposes as well. Of course we have all heard the old Italian folklore that in order to keep the witches away you are to hang a clove of garlic over your doorway. Well, I am not sure if there is any scientific data to support those claims, but there is a ton of scientific research that supports the fact that garlic is a natural wonder drug. Quite literally!

Today it is well recognized that garlic promotes a healthy heart and immune system because of its antioxidant properties. It also helps to maintain healthy circulation of the blood. But probably one of its most ‘miraculous’ properties is that it actually has the ability to enhance the immune cell activity in the body. It is known to stimulate T cell action and to support…

Cold Sores And Lysine

Cold sores can be painful, but almost worse than that, they are confusing to say the least. We all know that cold sores are a herpes viral infection. They are usually type 1 which is NOT the type that is sexually transmitted. Type 2 is the bugger that is common to the genitalia. However, the confusion arises because cold sores can be either type 1 or type 2. But since type 1 herpes is USUALLY the herpes virus responsible for those painful blisters we tend to say that it’s ONLY type 1. Well, only type 1 is more than enough, thank you very much. It hurts like the dickens and the antiviral medications and doctor visits are extremely costly. There are some natural remedies that are known to be effective both in treating an outbreak as well as in preventing a recurrence.

Scientific research over the past several years has indicated…

Can Indoor UV Lights Be Dangerous To Your Health?

We have been told over and over again that the danger from direct sunlight is in the UV rays. It is said to cause anything from premature wrinkling to brown spots on the skin to skin cancer. But now with the current energy crisis, the emphasis is to save energy and go green. We are encouraged to use those twisty little UV light bulbs in our homes and places of employment. This is causing some amount of confusion among consumers. If UV light is so bad for us, why are we being told to use those CFBs? CFB stands for compact fluorescent bulb, those spiral twisted light bulbs.

Actually, the amount of UV radiation that is emitted from those bulbs is nowhere near the amount that we get from direct sunlight. There doesn’t appear to be enough radiation to cause any serious damage UNLESS you have diseases such as lupus,…
