Garlic Does More Than Keep The Witches Away
For so many centuries people have been using garlic not only as a flavor for foods but for medicinal purposes as well. Of course we have all heard the old Italian folklore that in order to keep the witches away you are to hang a clove of garlic over your doorway. Well, I am not sure if there is any scientific data to support those claims, but there is a ton of scientific research that supports the fact that garlic is a natural wonder drug. Quite literally!
Today it is well recognized that garlic promotes a healthy heart and immune system because of its antioxidant properties. It also helps to maintain healthy circulation of the blood. But probably one of its most ‘miraculous’ properties is that it actually has the ability to enhance the immune cell activity in the body. It is known to stimulate T cell action and to support natural killer cells. At least 12 scientific studies on a global level have documented that it can reduce cholesterol.
Also, garlic is a natural antibiotic. It is said the component in garlic called allicin is responsible for the antibiotic properties. Allicin is produced when garlic is chewed, bruised or chopped. And one milligram of allicin is supposed to be as strong as 15 units of penicillin.
You may not be able to keep the witches away but you sure can ward off a plethora of health issues with garlic. Well, maybe you COULD keep the witches away. Just eat a couple cloves and breathe heavily when you greet them at the doorway. That would probably work better than hanging it anyway, and you could get the healthful benefits at the same time.
