Ginkgo Biloba, Altitude & Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

altitude sicknessIt appears that Ginkgo Biloba may be the oldest seed bearing plant in the world and it may date back to the Permian period which was two hundred and seventy million years ago.

Although it has been used for countless centuries for any number of healthful reasons, in recent years studies have proven that Ginkgo Biloba is indeed effective in helping to alleviate the often debilitating symptoms of altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is often referred to as AMS, or Acute Mountain Sickness.

While Ginkgo Biloba is found to be effective against AMS, it is not found to have any effect on HACE or HAPE. High Altitude Cerebral Edema and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema are much more severe and if you intend to do any mountain climbing your safety can be incumbent upon learning about these very serious conditions. Ginkgo Biloba is indeed proven to be effective against AMS but it will not prevent the onset of the HACE or HAPE.

Even having said that, you should never underestimate the potential for AMS to have life threatening consequences.

While Ginkgo Biloba is able to alleviate many of the symptoms you should still take the time to acclimatize yourself in stages as you climb to higher altitudes. There is sufficient documented evidence online that you can reference if you intend to use Ginkgo Biloba to delay the onset of Acute Mountain Sickness. Although there is evidence that supports these claims, it is always in your best interest to speak with a well versed medical professional before heading up a mountain if you are unprepared for what awaits you.
