Green Tea Side Effects

teaAs with most things in life, green tea has both good and bad effects. While you may be aware of the good ones, you may not be as informed of the more negative effects.

Because of its caffeine content, a common side effect of green tea is difficulty in falling asleep. Other effects due to the presence of caffeine include higher blood pressure and heart rate, heart palpitations, as well as an increase in the frequency of urination. Other potential green tea side effects include headache, anxiety, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea or constipation. The amount of caffeine in tea, however, isn’t that high and the side effects are usually associated with a high intake of tea.

For those who consume green tea in extremely high amounts, one concern may be dependence on the tea. And like with most addictive substances, stopping cold turkey can result in withdrawal symptoms.

Pregnant women should also be careful since it is thought that tea can affect the metabolism of folic acid which is important in the growth and development of the fetus. High intake of caffeine has also been associated with increased risk of miscarriages. While pregnant women can still drink tea, it is recommended that they lessen their intake to at most 2 to 4 cups a day.

Green tea may also cause drug interactions so if you have a medical condition that requires you to take medication, be sure to consult with a doctor first to check if it’s alright to drink the tea.
Despite the said side effects, however, the benefits of green tea still overshadow its negative effects.
