Hemorrhoids: Common Causes and Risk Factors
While hemorrhoids are extremely common and there are all kinds of OTC preparations to soothe and alleviate painful bouts, it would be better to try to prevent the onset of hemorrhoids whenever possible. Several common causes and/or risk factors have been identified and it is good to know what they are in the hopes of avoiding them altogether. This is especially important if you have a family history of hemorrhoids because genetic tendency is one of the key risk factors.
Probably the number one culprit is constipation. This is because straining to evacuate the bowels increases pressure in the rectum which in turn causes inflammation. In order to avoid or relieve constipation, naturopathic advocates feel that you should avoid chemical laxatives and stool softeners. In order to keep the digestive tract cleansed and avoid constipation altogether it is suggested that you increase your intake of dietary fiber whether through supplementation or in the foods you are eating.
Age is another factor. Beginning in the 30’s there is a progressive weakening in the anal and rectal areas that increases over time. At least 50% of people over the age of 50 seek treatment.
Other factors that increase the risk for developing hemorrhoids are sitting or standing for long periods of time as well as repeated heavy lifting. Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis might cause hemorrhoids as well.
And then there is the monster that is the cause of so very many health related issues and diseases, obesity. That excess weight, especially in the pelvic or abdominal areas, increases pressure on the veins.
While there are certainly many other root causes and/or risk factors, know the ones you can do something about with simple lifestyle and/or dietary adjustments. You know what they say about an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you’ve never had a hemorrhoid you don’t want one now. They are a real pain in the butt.
