How Should Diabetics Lose Weight?
Weight management is essential in order to manage diabetes. Weight loss in diabetes can be intentional or non-intentional. Intentional weight loss is good because weight management will help regulate insulin levels. However, sudden and excessive weight loss in diabetics is indicative of other underlying problems and must be discussed with a doctor at the earliest.
Diabetic diets aim to reduce ones intake of carbohydrates. These low carbohydrate, high protein diets will help stabilize insulin levels to a great extent. Raw sugar and processed high carb, high sugar foods like biscuits, candy, soft drinks etc should be avoided altogether because the body tends to convert these into fat. On the other hand, more complex carbohydrates like that found in cereals, fruits, vegetables etc are not so harmful and are permitted in moderate amounts. Protein rich foods like lean meat, eggs, green salads, sprouts and pulses are an integral part of the diabetic diet. Decreasing the carbohydrate intake causes the body to resort to burning fat molecules to meet its energy requirements. Heart healthy fats like those found in vegetable oils, fish liver oil, poultry etc are permitted. Another important point to remember is that diabetics should exercise regularly.
Exercise should be a part of your routine for at least 5 days in a week. Walking is a great exercise for diabetics as is cycling, swimming etc. It is a good idea to get friends and family to join you so that you don’t quit.
Dietary modifications and a good exercise regimen are the best ways by which diabetics can lose weight and keep excess pounds at bay.
