Stages of Colon Cancer

colon cancerThere are five recognized stages of colon cancer or colorectal cancer. Colon cancer if caught early enough has one of the highest success rates for treating it. If it is left for too long and develops in to the later stages the chances are not as good as they were. It is therefore very important that at the first sign of having a problem you get yourself medical advice from a professional.

Stage zero.
If caught early enough the chances of survival are around 95% over the 5 year appraisal period. In this stage the cancerous cells are only on the wall of the colon in small polyps. These are easily treatable as they are easily detached from the colon wall when having a colonoscopy, this procedure is known as a polypectomy. The chances of this generating into the later stages is then eliminated.

Stage one
In this stage the polyp has grown and has turned into a full blown tumour affect a part of the colon wall. Treatment for this is normally more involved and usually will require a operation. This involves the removal of the affected section of the colon then rejoining the colon together.
The 5 year survival rate at this stage is around the 95%.

Stage two

This is when the cancer has spread beyond the colon wall but not as far as the lymph glands.
The 5 year survival rate at this stage is around the 60%.

Stage three
Where the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes surrounding but has not yet reached any other organs.
The 5 year survival rate at this stage is around the 35-60%.

Stage four
This is where the cancer has spread to other organs such as you liver etc..
Unfortunately the rate of people reaching the 5 year survival time is around 3% once at this stage.
