Diabetes is on the rise like never before. More and more people are being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and many doctors are saying that it could be prevented in most cases. The number one cause for Type 2 Diabetes is directly related to obesity. Scientific research has shown that as much as 85% of all diabetes could be eliminated if we could control obesity in our society.
Statistics show that you CAN lower your risk of getting diabetes if you could maintain proper body weight. Body weight is measured not so much in pounds as it is in what is known as BMI, or Body Mass Index. While it doesn’t actually measure the percentage of fat, it does estimate proportions based on height and weight.
Current thought is that a healthy BMI is between 18 and 25. Further, doctors and medical professionals maintain that if you want to significantly reduce your risk of getting diabetes you should strive to keep your BMI under 25.
Doctors further claim that even losing as few as five or ten pounds can reduce the necessary amount of diabetes medicines such as insulin, and in some cases eliminate the need for them altogether. If you are thirty pounds overweight you increase your risk by 4000%. That’s an astounding forty times the risk factor! It is understandable that if you want to decrease the risk for contracting Type 2 Diabetes you should maintain a healthy, proper weight range. Diet and exercise not only help you to look and feel better, but can also reduce your risk for diabetes as well.
