The function of the thyroid gland is to produce hormones to stimulate metabolism. If there is an excess of these hormones produced by the thyroid a condition occurs which causes metabolism to be over-stimulated. This in turn has the effect of speeding up various biological systems which resembles epinephrine (adrenaline) overdose. The symptoms include, but are not limited to, palpitations, tremor, anxiety, diarrhea and weight loss.

It is felt that natural treatments can reduce and even eliminate the need for surgery or drugs. Because the metabolism is so greatly increased with hyperthyroidism it stands to reason that essential vitamins and minerals are used more quickly. Replacement supplements are usually necessary.

One of the major concerns in hyperthyroidism is the effect it has on the autoimmune system. Because the system has been depleted of essential nutrients that protect and bolster immunity it is all the more important to replenish them. Among the nutrients that should be supplemented to boost the immune system, the essential fatty acids, zinc, copper, selenium iodine, grape seed extract, Q10 and tyrosine which is an amino acid.

There are a variety of deficiencies that are known to be the result of hyperthyroidism and naturopaths and doctors feel that supplementation can counteract or avoid the problems altogether. Common nutrients that are indicated for these deficiencies are calcium, melatonin, L-carnitine, niacin, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Digestive Enzymes.

Also, there are herbal remedies available that can slow the progression of thyroid disease or can symptomatically correct imbalances. These herbal remedies can also bolster the immune system. If you are currently taking medication or have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, you should always consult with your doctor before taking any supplements. This is all the more important if you are currently on any medication.
