Mucocele is a clinical terms that describes swelling in your mouth. Mucocele is a soft, mucus or fluid filled enlargement which usually happen under your tongue. If you have Mucocele in your mouth, it causes discomfort and if you don’t do anything, it may usually goes away in few weeks.
Why Mucocele Happens?
Mucocele in mouth can happens for various reasons including frequent chewing of tongue, mouth injury or it could be anything that effects salivary gland duct which leaks into soft tissue of mouth. If you think you have lump in your mouth or under lip and it doesn’t go away in few days or weeks, you may want to check with your doctor just to make sure it is not something else.
Where Mucocele Can Happen?
There are different types of Mucocele like Orbital Mucocele, Tongue Mucocele, Salivary Mucocele, Gallbladder Mucocele or Mucocele of Appendix. There are medical terms and you need to check with your physician for reasons, causes or symptoms of each. But Mouth Mucocele usually happens under tongue, inner side of cheek, gum area, bottom inside part of your mouth and sometimes in nose also. Sometime Inflammation of sinuses can cause Mucocele. Mucocele found on the floor of the mouth is also called Ranula and they are larger than other Mucocele.
Mucocele Symptoms
If you see mucus lined cysts of any size under lower lip or anywhere in your mouth that has bluish translucent color and see swelling in your mouth that is not normal and causes pain, chances are you have Mucocele. If it doesn’t go away in few days, you may need to look at it and find proper treatment for it by consulting your doctor.
Mucocele Home Remedy
Usually you don’t have to do anything to treat Mouth Mucocele but to prevent it happening in future, you may need to stop biting your lip or other parts of mouth. Don’t drink too hot like coffee, rinse your mouth with salt water couple times a day for a week or so. This will help drain fluid trapped. if you prefer surgical removal of mucoceles, consult your doctor to see if this is right option for you.
